Prescribed Burn at BREC's Howell Park!

  • We will be assisting BREC with their first-ever prescribed burn! It will most likely take place on Monday, February 14th. Please contact cmatus1@lsu.edu for more information!

 

Data Collection at the Nature Conservancy's property in Abita Springs, LA

  • On Saturday, February 26th, we will be taking a field trip to Abita Springs. We will have time to botanize, collect plants, bird watching, hike, and may be able to help them with some data collection! 
  • We will leave the RNR building at 9:00 a.m.

Past Events

  • Botany Club Valentine's Day Art Sale - February  11th 9:00 am to 4 p.m. 
    • We will be selling all the wonderful art our members have made for valentines day gifts in the lobby of RNR. As the semester begins, we will have a couple of art nights to create our inventory for the sale!

 

  • Art Night!  - February  3rd & 10th,  @ 5:30 p.m. 
    • We will be creating art for our annual fundraiser! Paint, dried plant specimens, carving woods, bird nesting materials, wine glasses, frames, and more will be at your disposal! Come on down, grab some pizza, and support the Botany Club at LSU.

 

  • Arbor Day at Burden Museum and Gardens - January 22nd at 8:30 a.m. - Noon
    • We will be helping families with their trees which includes helping identify (they will be tagged), move plants/dirt, and plant trees.
    • We will also help families identify locations where the trees should go (there are stakes put out where each species should go - matching ribbon colors)
    • There will be a scavenger hunt for the kids and they are selling confessions and native trees which they may need help with
    • There will also be a timbersports display that is put on by the LSU RNR Forestry Club (that we have been invited to partake in also)
  • First Club Meeting of the Year (!!!!) - Thursday, January 20th at 6:00 p.m.
    • In person, or on zoom if the first two weeks is remote! This will really be so that any questions can be answered about Arbor Day, Art nights/ sales as well as so we can all get reintroduced. If it is in person, food will be served!
  • Tunica Day Trip!
    • On October 9th, we will be leaving from the RNR building at 8:00 a.m. and be out all day!
    • Some people have reached out to me saying they have prior engagements so we will probably leave at the latest by 3 or 4.
    • Hiking, collecting plants, and general exploration!
    • One of our members also said that they may be open to teaching us how to catch insects!
  • ID night!
    • On Tuesday the 12th at 5:30 p.m. in RNR room 206 we will be taking the plants we collected the week before and learning to use microscopes to identify them. We will also make labels for submission to the herbarium!
    • Food and sick jams will be provided.
    • If you cannot go on the Tunica trip but want to participate, I can bring some unidentified plants from collections of mine and some of my coworkers for you to join in the fun with!
  • Lee Memorial Forest for a joint field trip with the Forestry club/botanizing field trip!
    • October 21-24 we will leave RNR on the 21st at 10:00 a.m. and getting lunch at Yo-yos that at noon in Bogalusa.
    • We will be staying in the bunkhouses for a couple of days and helping Joe around the property with some prescribed burning.
    • We will have a couple of botanist guests such as Brian Early of LDWF, Dylan DeRouen of BREC, and mayhaps Dr. Reid of RNR join us!
    • We will have a loose itinerary that will be decided on closer to the trip, but it looks as though we may be able to get some of the RNR Professors out to teach the prescribed burning class so that you can work towards your certification. We will also have time to do some vegetation plots so that people can get experience with general plant ID and data collection!
    • There is a very large lodge on the property, but you are equally as welcome to tent camp.
    • This trip will be full of time to explore the property, have bonfires, collect plants, looks for herps, birds, and get experience in our field!
    • We will have vans leaving campus on the 21st and returning on the 24th so you are free to ride with us or drive on your own. Feel free to choose what days you would like to be there if not the entire time!
    • Food on the campsite will be provided, but the more food the merrier!

 

  • Botany Club Meeting on the last Thursday of the month.  
    • September 30th, 2021. We will meet at 5:30 p.m. in RNR 141
    • We will discuss the upcoming events and decide on dates for our camping trip, botanizing day trip, and ID night. 
  • Flower Bed Clean-out at LDWF!
    • Saturday, September 18th, 2021  from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. 
    • LDWF is located at 2000 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808
  • Hurricane Ida Tree Clean-Up
    • On Saturday, September 4th, 2021, we will be meeting at the Renewable Natural Resources building at 8:00 a.m. to go to Burden Museum & Gardens to help clean up downed trees, limbs, and other debris. After lunch, we will head to Baker to help in hurricane restoration. We will be riding in LSU vans. If you have axes, hand saws, chainsaws, loppers, pruners, or gloves, please bring them! Please dress appropriately in field clothes, bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water. 
  • 2021 School Year Introductory Meeting
    • August 26th, 2021 @ 5:30 p.m. in RNR room 142
    • Free pizza, drinks and crafts!
  • Botanizing Field trip to Lee Memorial Forest

    • Wednesday, May the 5th - Thursday the 6th.

  • BREC's BioBlitz 2021

    • On Saturday April 17th, we will be leading a Plant ID hike from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and a Plant ID workshop from 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

  • Tree and Invasive Plant Surveys with BREC

    • On Friday April 16th , the Tree survey will begin at 12:30 p.m. and last until 2:30 p.m.
      The Invasive Plant survey will begin at 3:00 p.m. and last until 5:00 p.m.

  • Idlewild Orchard Clean-up Day

    • On Monday, March 29th, the Botany Club, the Wildlife Society, the Forestry Club, and the Horticulture Club will all be meeting at Idlewild Research Station from 1:30-3:30 to begin the preliminary steps of our joint project.

  • Bayou Kisatchie Camping Trip

    • Our botanizing field trip to Kisatchie is this weekend! 
      We are going to be leaving RNR at 8:00 a.m. this Saturday March the 27th!

  • Valentine's Day Fundraiser
    • We will selling framed plant specimens, cards, jewelry, dried flower bouquets, and paintings for Valentine's day as a fundraiser
    • 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Renewable Natural Resources building on campus!

    • All day on Saturday, November 7th. Departure in the morning at the Renewable Natural Resources Building (Corner of Tower Drive and Highland). Transportation provided, but you may drive yourself
